My Friend Is Jealous of Me?

My friend is jealous that I am friends with the person he likes. He says that he really wants to go out with this girl but is jealous that I am so close to her and doesn't want me hanging around her when they go out. I really value my friend's friendship so I am trying to mend this problem but he is avoiding me. What do I do?
